The 1963-1964 is considered the grails of vintage SG guitars. The neck got more rounded and thicker, making them more desireable for players as models before had very thin necks and was more prone to headstock breaks.

Changes on this year models:
1963: Gradually getting a more rounded neck carve trough this year. Giving it a sturdier construction.
1963: Patent number Humbuckers replaces PAFs
Early 1963: Some sideway vibratos still featured on '63. But was replaced soon with Maestro Vibrato System
Late 1963: Les Paul ends endorsement. Lester was not a fan of this guitar. "Les Paul Standard" was removed, and replaced with plain black trussrod covers. From now on. simply called "SG Standard"
